The problem is that of making sense of the vast choice available: 300 hotels and affittacamere (boarding houses), countless flats and several religious institutions and foresteria (institutions with guest quarters for foreigners). The internet is now the obvious source of information (try entering “Venice” and “flats”, or whatever you’re looking for in a Google search), but there are also accommodation sections in guidebooks, each with their own favourite recommendations, weekend newspapers and the good old-fashioned travel agent. Much of this information appears on the web site Any corrections and additional tips will be gratefully received.

The English Church where we’ll be rehearsing is in Campo San Vio, on the south bank of the Grand Canal between the Accademia and the Guggenheim Collection, so if you want to stay somewhere close, go for the eastern end of Dorsoduro, or the south western end of San Marco, or even on the island of La Giudecca (though you’ll have the bother of having to wait for a vaporetto), but given that walking the traffic-free streets and alleys and riding the vaporetti are two of the city’s delights, you may be happy to stay further afield.

Centro Culturale Don Orione Artigianelli Some previous weeks have been held here, so it is a favourite of Lacock regulars. Tel 041 522 4077, fax 041 528 6214, email Single €80, double €130; the rooms all are ensuite. They will often tell you that they are fully booked. This can mean that a travel agent has asked them to hold all the rooms in the hope of passing them on to a group; these rooms sometimes become available again at short notice, so it’s always worth asking.

I am quite happy to act as a clearing house for people wanting to get together to rent flats, by which I mean I will put anyone interested in contact and let you sort it out amongst yourselves. Various people have recommended these sites: (this one is in German)
