CORSHAM WINTER SCHOOL
further details of a course for choral singers led by Bill Carslake
28 December 2021 to 2 January 2022
Corsham is an attractive small town in the south Cotswolds, its many fine buildings attesting to its mediaeval prosperity from the wool trade, and later, the quarrying of Bath Stone. The
Corsham winter school will be held in the recently refurbished Victorian town hall, a very conducive singing venue with good heating, ventilation, lighting and acoustics.
The plan is to start the Winter School with an afternoon (5pm-7pm) session on Tuesday 28 December. All
rehearsals will be held in the Town Hall in the centre of the town. Then from Wednesday to Saturday there will be rehearsals from 9.30am to 1pm and from 5pm to 7pm. We will see the New Year in with the traditional party at Cantax
House in Lacock. The schedule on Sunday 2nd January will be slightly different and will include a performance (though probably without an audience) in the Town Hall in the early evening. All the music will be printed in a booklet
which will be sent to you before the course.
Of course we must expect the Covid-19 pandemic to be still with us and we will take all sensible precautions to lessen the risk of infection. At this
stage it is not possible to specify the precise protocols that it would be prudent to put in place, but the following are likely. All who join the course will be expected to be fully vaccinated and to have shown a negative test
result shortly before the start of the course. The hall will be more ventilated than usual and we may take more frequent breaks to allow accumulated aerosols to disperse bring warm clothing. We will not offer coffee or tea in the
Town Hall kitchen, which tends to become crowded; well bring our own or go out to the High Street. It will probably be wise not to go out to dine in a large group, when the noise level tends to rise. We will encourage singers to
get together in smaller, quieter groups; some may prefer to stay in places where they can cater for themselves in the evening. We will limit the size of the group to thirty or thereabouts. We will refund in full any fees paid if we
have to cancel the course before it starts.
You arrange your own accommodation. Corsham has a range of places to stay: bed and breakfast houses in the town or surrounding countryside, pubs,
comfortable hotels, self-catering cottages and the spare rooms of local supporters of the course. We will send you a list when you have accepted a place. The nearest railway stations are Chippenham and Bradford-on-Avon (the hyphens
are necessary if you are dealing with it on the internet); National Express coaches from London Victoria and Heathrow stop on the edge of the town, making Heathrow as convenient an airport as Bristol.
FEES AND ENROLMENT
The fee for the course is £475, paid in two parts: a deposit of £200 or the equivalent in euros on registration and £275 by 1 December. The deposit may be credited to another course if you have to withdraw
and we are able to allocate your place to another singer. The fee includes payment for the booklet containing all the public domain music, which will be sent to you in advance, but not meals or accommodation. To enrol, just email
us the information listed below or if we already know it just let us know that you would like to come. We will then send you details of how you may pay the deposit.
